Humanitarian Crisis in Ukraine

Humanitarian Crisis in Ukraine
Like

As the crisis continues to unfold in Ukraine, your employees may be curious to know how your company is responding and how they can provide support. We have gathered several resources to help you determine your relief and response efforts.

First, validate what is going on in the region by sharing context with your workforce. As the Edelman Trust Barometer continues to reveal, employers and their communications are trusted sources of information.

Next, determine the appropriate level of action to take at this time. While this will undoubtedly be a global, long-term response effort, keep in mind your company’s local operations, the voices and interests of your employees in-country and elsewhere, current NGO partnerships, the unique products and services your company provides that could be useful, and your budget for disaster relief.

As seasoned corporate citizenship practitioners, you know that "cash is king" in the immediate relief efforts, palletized in-kind contributions are best once requested, and volunteers should not self-deploy. Remind your employees of these tenants of disaster response whenever possible. Check out this CECE post on general actions to take after a disaster.

For more thoughts on how to respond to this specific crisis, please access the recently released UN Business Guide: Ukraine Humanitarian Crisis (March 2022) produced by OCHA (UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs).

Below are several organizations seeking financial support that have activated local and international relief efforts:

U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation Corporate Aid Tracker & Coordination Call

Finally, we encourage companies to monitor the Corporate Aid Tracker, which lists company-submitted descriptions of crisis-related actions, and use the form provided to share your company's response and relief efforts.

The Chamber hosted a coordination call earlier in March to hear from organizations and nonprofit partners responding to the crisis on the ground. Watch the recording.

Points of Light's Global Affiliate Network

When a crisis unfolds, we know that people everywhere want to help, but their support must be informed by those impacted. That’s why we elevate and support our most valuable resources in the region, our Global Network affiliates. Our affiliates in the vicinity of Ukraine are positioned to respond to needs as they arise by listening in real time to long-established partners and people who are being affected firsthand.

Currently, our affiliates are assisting refugees by:

  • Helping refugees who are crossing the Ukrainian border
  • Working with the International Red Cross to connect people with their displaced relatives
  • Providing essential goods and mental health resources
  • Facilitating job placement

In the early stages of any crisis, your contributions help to buy needed supplies, support transportation and expedite response to changing needs.

Your support of the POL response fund supports our affiliates in the region. If your organization would like to make a donation to Points of Light to support the Ukraine Crisis Response Fund, please contact Vice President of Corporate Partnerships Rick Bell to learn more.
