CECP releases Giving in Numbers: 2020 Edition

CECP’s Giving in Numbers is the unrivaled leader in benchmarking on corporate social investments. It is the premier industry survey on data insights and trends, providing standard-setting criteria in a go-to guide that has defined the field. The report covers cash and in-kind/product grant making, employee volunteerism and giving, and impact measurement.

CECP found in their annual Giving in Numbers: 2020 Edition that companies have risen to elevated expectations and heightened community needs. With the growing recognition that companies must respond to the needs of their significant shareholders, companies are increasing international giving, measuring the business value of community investments, and offering flexible volunteer opportunities for employees.

Highlights of this year’s report include:

  • Total corporate social investments increased by 7% between 2017 and 2019.
  • Total international giving grew by 49%, signaling greater focus on international end-recipients across multi-billion-dollar companies represented in Giving in Numbers.
  • The Healthcare industry drove the largest share of aggregate increase in total giving for the fourth year in a row.
  • For the second year, the Giving in Numbers Survey asked for data on the number of annual VTO hours that companies are offering employees, which in 2019 was 8 hours on average. The total number of hours offered annually for volunteering both on and outside company time increased by 26% in the last three years.
  • This year’s report includes a new feature – “Future Outlook: Looking Ahead to 2021”- that provides the reader with additional insights and context regarding some of the corporate sector’s latest initiatives and responses to the pandemic and anti-racism efforts developed by many companies that have played a critical role in helping alleviate some of the hardships their communities face.

Access to benchmarking data allows companies to enhance strategy and make the business case for further investment in society. CECP has the largest data set in the industry, sourced from more than 500 multi-billion-dollar companies over nearly 15 years, representing more than $250 billion in corporate social investments.
